Paul
J. Wagner is a talented carver who works in wood,
antler, fossil ivory and other natural materials. He brings the eye
of a sculptor to the lines and forms of his carvings. His goal is
to share his understanding of the interconnectedness and beauty of
the natural world through artworks, which are a pleasure to touch.
Paul’s work is often reminiscent of the lines and forms of native
northwest carvings. He particularly enjoys using hand carving tools,
especially the bent knife and adz. Each work starts with the inspiration
of the natural materials and he often feels that his works are just
waiting to be uncovered by his carving tools.
He also designs jewelry for the NorthCoast Collection. These miniature
sculptures are carved in wax and then using lost wax casting techniques,
the jewelry is cast in gold, sterling silver or platinum.
“Organic forms and a love of the shapes and materials
of nature inform and inspire my lifetime pursuit of creating art.
Working with wood, antler, fossil ivory and carving wax, I create
objects which delight the eye and hand.”
