Paul and Carolyn have a shared studio in the outskirts of Olympia, Washington. It is a special partnership of life and love. Inquires are welcome. Studio tours by appointment.

Paul J. Wagner is a talented carver who works in wood, antler, fossil ivory and other natural materials. He brings the eye of a sculptor to the lines and forms of his carvings. His goal is to share his understanding of the interconnectedness and beauty of the natural world through artworks, which are a pleasure to touch. Paul’s work is often reminiscent of the lines and forms of native northwest carvings. He particularly enjoys using hand carving tools, especially the bent knife and adz. Each work starts with the inspiration of the natural materials and he often feels that his works are just waiting to be uncovered by his carving tools.
He also designs jewelry for the NorthCoast Collection. These miniature sculptures are carved in wax and then using lost wax casting techniques, the jewelry is cast in gold, sterling silver or platinum.

“Organic forms and a love of the shapes and materials of nature inform and inspire my lifetime pursuit of creating art. Working with wood, antler, fossil ivory and carving wax, I create objects which delight the eye and hand.”

Why we call our studio Coquina
Coquina \Ko-‘kee-nuh\ noun

A geological term for a sedimentary rock, comprised mostly of fossil shells. The shape of individual shells can be appreciated, while at the same time they are cemented together to make up the larger formation.

Like that aggregate rock formation, our combined studio (wood shop, quilt studio and carving bench) represents the coming together of many skills, materials and inspirations. These can be seen in our individual works, our collaborative projects, and as elements of our broader creative endeavors.
